While We Study: What Our Church Is Learning About God Through Our Scholars
If you’ve noticed more notebooks, flashcards, and tired smiles on Sunday mornings—you’re not imagining things. Epiphany is full of scholars.
There are a number of our members pursuing post-secondary education. And while they’re the ones studying, God is teaching all of us something.
He’s showing us that learning isn’t just about a degree; it’s about discipleship. Disciples study to comprehend and apply, not just to pass a test. And each one of our learners are doing just that—pursuing studies to hone the gifts God’s given them.
“Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as something done for the Lord and not for people.” — Colossians 3:23
So today, we pause to celebrate our learners and the lessons their journeys teach us all.
Our Scholars
Below are the students in our church family who are showing us what it means to learn faithfully. Each person is a reminder that God meets us in classrooms, labs, libraries, and Zoom calls just as much as He meets us in worship.
What Their Studies Teach All of Us
Every one of our learners’ paths tells a story about the Kingdom.
Social Work teaches us compassion with boundaries—how to love people deeply while trusting God to carry the rest.
Educational Leadership teaches us that true influence isn’t about power; it’s about preparation and service.
Sports Psychology teaches us that perseverance is spiritual before it’s physical.
Seminary studies remind us that God’s Word should be treated as seriously as any other degree.
Finance and Nonprofit Management teach us that resources in the right hands can build mercy into our city.
Physical Therapy teaches us that God heals through hands, patience, and process.
Special Education teaches us that every person bears God’s image and deserves care tailored to their worth.
Together, these lessons paint a picture of how God uses people to meet real and felt needs. This is just one of the tangible ways he shows his love to the world. And we’re so honored to be a church home to people training and intentionally upskilling to be more effective hands and feet of Jesus.
Study & Sabbath: Rhythms for the Rest of Us
Even if you’re not in school, you’re learning something every day. And just like our students, you need space to rest, reflect, and recharge.
Here are three simple rhythms inspired by their faithfulness and Jesus’ invitation in Matthew 11:28–29:
1) Pause Before You Produce.
Take five minutes before work, study, or errands to breathe and pray:
“Lord, help me learn what You’re teaching before I chase what I’m achieving.”
2) Rest Without Guilt.
Sabbath isn’t a reward for finishing everything. It’s a reminder that God is still working when you aren’t. Try setting aside one tech-free hour this week just to be.
3) Let Community Keep You Grounded.
Text someone from your E-Group or Wonder Team when the load feels heavy. We don’t grow alone. We grow better together.
To our learners: Though you’re studying late, you’re still showing up early on Sundays and throughout the week, serving God in the middle of deadlines, discussion boards, and dissertations. We see you and we thank you.
A Prayer for Our Scholars
Lord,
Thank You for the students in our church—for every late night, every flashcard, every prayer whispered over an exam or paper. Show them how you’re walking with them in their studies. Reveal to them elements of you and your character as they learn more about the world you created. Teach them that wisdom is more than information. Keep them humble when the grades are high, encouraged when the grades slip, and secure when the road feels long. Use their learning to bless our city, our schools, and Your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, amen.
